This is an idea to promote <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/mh4docs\"><strong>#MH4Docs<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is an idea started by Dr Geoff Toogood <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gdtoogood\">@gdtoogood<\/a> who was the first to suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/crazysocks4docs\">#CrazySocks4Docs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was also promoted and expanded upon by Dr.Eric Levi who&#8217;s done some great <a href=\"https:\/\/ericlevi.com\/2017\/05\/30\/socks-for-docs\/\">blog posts<\/a> recently discussing the mental health issues of doctors. This has taken off on Twitter, and a large number of doctors have taken up the challenge to wear odd socks today to generate conversation about Mental Health and suicide in doctors.<\/p>\n<h4>So what are the issues?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>1 in 3 Doctors at any given day in Australia is going through significant symptoms of burnout.<\/li>\n<li>About 50% or more of doctors worldwide have clinically significant symptoms of anxiety or depression (and the number is growing yearly).<\/li>\n<li>The recent tragic suicide of Dr. Chloe Abbott highlighted the fact that there were 20 recorded suicides of doctors in NSW in recent years (note this is only the recorded ones &#8211; there are a number of reasons why they may not be reported).<\/li>\n<li>The suicide of Dr.Andrew Bryant a well respected and established doctor, and the frank and moving\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brisbanetimes.com.au\/queensland\/i-didnt-see-it-coming-wife-of-brisbane-doctor-writes-letter-about-his-suicide-20170511-gw2ef2.html\">email<\/a> that his wife shared, helped generate a lot of discussion and awareness this year as well. It highlighted the fact that mental health isn&#8217;t just a problem for junior doctors.<\/li>\n<li>In the US more than 400 doctors a year die by suicide [<a href=\"http:\/\/emedicine.medscape.com\/article\/806779-overview\">1<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>A study in the MJA [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mja.com.au\/journal\/2016\/205\/6\/suicide-health-professionals-retrospective-mortality-study-australia-2001-2012\">2<\/a>] showed the rate of suicide among female health professional groups was double that\u00a0for women in the broader workforce.<\/li>\n<li>In a review in UK by the GMC it was found 28 doctors who were under investigation (2005-2013) by the GMC had subsequently committed suicide [<a href=\"http:\/\/cms.pulsetoday.co.uk\/uploads\/2014\/12\/18\/a\/s\/r\/Internal-review-into-suicide-in-FTP-processes----FINAL-EMBARGOED.pdf\">3<\/a>]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The information below is from the BeyondBlue National Mental Health Survey of Doctors and medical students (2013)[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondblue.org.au\/docs\/default-source\/research-project-files\/bl1132-report---nmhdmss-full-report_web.pdf\">4<\/a>]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately one-quarter of doctors reported having thoughts of taking their own life prior to the last 12 months of the survey.<\/li>\n<li>10.4% reported having these thoughts within the last 12 months of the survey.<\/li>\n<li>Approximately 2% of doctors reported having ever attempted suicide.<\/li>\n<li>Females had a significantly higher rate of suicide attempts compared to male doctors (3.3% and 1.6% respectively).<\/li>\n<li>Doctors without children reported higher rates of suicide attempts compared to doctors with children (3.2% and 1.86% respectively).<\/li>\n<li>Doctors who were separated or divorced (6.4%) had a higher rate of attempted suicide in comparison to both single doctors (3.6%) and those in committed relationships (1.9%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The above stats and numbers in no way convey the emotional and personal costs of this issue to the doctors involved and to their families. The numbers don&#8217;t show the cost to the health system and the patients cared for by these and others doctors dealing with mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>More needs to be done.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We need to remove the stigma associated with mental health that is ingrained in our culture and general population but also specifically in our profession.
